Apr 23, 2015 How do I use the Apple Braille font in Indesign? Karl Photographer Apr 23, 2015 1:50 PM I made a text box and tried typing some text with Times NR so I could see what I'm typing. But when I tried changing the font to any of the Braille fonts they just appeared as boxes.

Description
Braille Pad Student is a word processor for Braille. It can handle Unified English Braille (UEB or UEBC), Grade 1 (uncontracted) and Grade 2 (contracted) Braille.
Please note the keys are configured in the menu item Window | Configuration. If your keyboard does not normally support all 6 keys being pressed at once, you can configure one of the keys to be a shift key (example shift, z,x,b,n,m for the 6 dots).
Because this app uses a special braille font, you can email the text to people with no special software (as in ⠠⠺⠑⠇⠉⠕⠍⠑ ⠞⠕ ⠠⠃⠗⠇ ⠠⠏⠁⠙).
Braille Pad Pro was designed to be helpful for sighted people working to learn Braille. You can load, edit, save, email, and print files. BraillePad Pro natively supports files in the popular .DXB format. Files can be opened in BraillePad Pro directly from web links or from your email. There are many resources on the web that have complete Braille books that you can download for free directly into the app.
We have included an in-app dictionary that allows you to look up the Braille letters, numbers, symbols, and contractions by English or by Braille. This is NOT a dictionary of every word in English converted to Braille, rather it is a complete listing of the symbols and combinations of symbols you may find in a Grade 2 Braille document. The dictionary shows each of the multiple meanings where applicable (see screen shot for example). The dictionary currently does not support UEBC, if you have interest in seeing this added, please drop us an email.

Braille Writer Student
This app works well, but I think it could use some overhauling. First, it needs a transcriber bar at the bottom like the Duxbury Perky Duck Braille Writer for PC’s has. This helps as you braille along and spot mistakes. Second, it needs to a toolbar for: margins and centering; spacing (for 41 spaces per line and 25 lines per page); page numbering; a choice of Sim Braille (showing all 6 dots, but highlighting the ones needed per cell) for those who prefer it.
These would make brailling with your app so much more convenient. Please consider adding them so that they can be updated by those of us who purchased this. I do appreciate the dictionary that came with BWS.

BRF, Please
Yay, a 6-key entry program on the mac! THANK YOU! However, most braille printers require .brf file formats - I still have to take this .dxb file, move it over to a windows machine, and then use Perky Duck to save it as a .brf file. Having the option to save as a .brf file would be beyond helpful, and mean I could easily use this for transcription work.
Similarly, having an option to set the line width would be a huge help in transcribing, to make sure everything comes out properly when formatting is an issue. I can resize the window to be 40 cells, but it would be nice to have a standard setting I could just click on. Further, spaces need to be the same size as braille cells, for similar spacing issues. Thank you so much!

Good for entry, no SimBraille
The program works smoothly for entering Braille text using the six-key sdfjkl method. However, only one font is available, and it is not SimBraille. In other words, you cannot judge spacing, which is essential for proper formatting of Braille pages. To remedy this, I downloaded Duxbury Braille fonts and installed them to use on MS Word. This means I can't see accurate spacing in Braille Writer, but after I've typed I can copy and paste into Word to check the spacing. This is a bit of a pain, but what's nice is that this also enables me to print Braille from Word (doesn't work using Braille Writer so far). (MacBook Air running OS 10.7.5)

Braille is actually part of most of the Unicode fonts.
I don't use it but assume you probably need the keyboard for it.

I would think you would need a special printer to make it readable. Merely typing it would not be very useful, so it would be paired up with whatever peripherals you may have.
